To eat or not to eat?

One of the first things i started doing upon learning of our darling bb's existence, was to read up on what to and what not to eat and drink.

I know my eating habits are not exactly fantastic.

I love my veggies and fruits, and i take plenty of them in different forms - fresh, raw, cooked, dried, preserved......

I avoid the common fastfood joints like your McD, KFC etc except the rare occasion when it's easier to just settle with it (say, when out with the sisters' kids, or when the other options for food, are even less attractive). In fact, my colleagues (and ex-colleagues) try hard to "educate" me on the various fastfood options around but so far, i'm having none of that =P

I'm not a fan of most foods we call staples. Most times, i eat 2 tablespoons of rice for dinner. Noodles? The only kind of noodles i like are bee hoon and rice noodles. Pasta? A 1-kg packet of pasta could last me an entire school semester when i was living on my own, whaddaya think?

I do however, have a weakness for bread. Fresh, heavenly breads with cheese and herbs, or fruits and nuts, grains... oh yum!

I also love an ice-cold beer. Or two. Maybe a couple more on weekends.

Milk? I hate milk. Can't take the smell of it. I must have stopped drinking milk even before i started kindergarten =P Can still remember that one time in primary school when pama forced made me drink milk before going off to school. I tried. I really did. I threw up EVERYTHING -____________- what a nightmare!

I love bubbletea. Lots of it. No wait. It's not actually bubbletea i love. It's ice-cold drinks in general (minus milk of cos). Tea, juices, smoothies, coffee. But GongCha, with it's super yummy white pearls, does make drinking bubbletea such a joyous act =D

There's loads more good and bad to my eating habits but you get the picture yes?

Sigh.

There's gonna be quite abit of sacrificing to do over the next few months.

For a start, look at this:

http://www.huggies.com.sg/pregnancy-diet.aspx

I'm looking at the bit that says Rice and Alternatives. 6 -7 servings a day. wtf? If 2 slices of bread = 1 serving, i've got to eat... 12 slices to get the ideal amount of carbs for energy? Or rice noodles. 1 bowl = 1 serving, so i've got to eat 6 bowls of rice noodles? Headache ah!!!

The Fruit and Veg bit is fine. In fact, i love snacking on fruits =) although i think if i looked further, there are certain kinds of fruits and veg a pregger' would also have to avoid. Like pineapples. Oh no! Pineapple tarts!!! =(

Meat and Alternatives? I think i'm ok there......

It's the Calcium part i'm frowning over. Milk. Yucks!! 1000mg a day. I'm going to have to find out how to get that 1000mg of Calcium from elsewhere.

Loads of changes to start making for bb's sake. Okokok, it's really for my own good too (i can hear hubs' nagging).

Some easy bits:

I gave up iced-coffee earlier this year during LENT. That daily trip to Starbucks? Yup. I gave that up over that 30-odd days, found out i could survive, and now don't need that morning fix anymore =) I can count the number of trips i've made to Starbucks this year with 2 hands. Yay!!! Addicted no more!

Bubbletea? I promised hubs' i'll cut back on that afternoon cup of iced-tea and i really have! No more daily afternoon ice-cold bubbletea. If we do pick up a GongCha on Saturdays after Novena, hubs definitely drinks more than i do =P Hypocrite. Haha! He's always nagging me about my bubbletea drinking but the minute we pick up a cup, he takes huge gulps of it first. And he has the cheek to say he's drinking more for my own good (less for me). Hahahah! He's impossible like that.

The harder stuff:

Ice-cold drinks in general. Alcohol, juices, water......... the weather is sOOOooooooo hot! How not to want something ice-cold?!! *cries

Oh, and sushi/ sashimi!!! OMG i just remembered that preggers aren't suppose to consume raw foods. There are heaps of differing opinions on this. Just Google! Haha. But i guess the main reason is the possibility of parasites in raw foods that can harm you if the food hasn't been handled properly? I told Dr. Tracey about my love for good sushi/ sashimi. Her advise is to avoid, unless i'm having irrepressible cravings =P I've told the hubs' that if i can't have my sashimi, he's not to go have 'em either. If we do, it's got to be goooooooooood sashimi.

Sigh.

One step at a time, one baby step at a time.
